Michley LSS-505 Lil’ Sew & Sew Review

The Michley LSS-505 Lil’ Sew & Sew Multi-Purpose Sewing Machine is a tiny marvel. Weighing in at just under 6 pounds, it’s a perfect machine for the novice learning how to sew, or even for the experienced sewing aficionado who wants a small, super-light machine for easy portability.

Not all mini sewing machines have such a low price tag, combined with the full functionality and interior metal workings of the LSS-505. In the under $100 range, it comes with all of the basic features. That includes eight basic stitch patterns (including zig-zag), the ability to control the sewing either with a foot pedal or hand switch, a long-lasting LED light to illuminate the section on which you’re working. It’s got a double threader, both forward and reverse functionality, two controllable speeds, and the ability to rewind the thread automatically. Straight sewing, hems, seams, cuffs, and all of the other “meat n’ potatoes” sewing basics can be done with this miniature, moveable marvel.

It’s tiny. At under six pounds, with dimensions of 10-4/5 by 4-4/5 by 10-1/5 inches, this mini sewing machine is made to squeeze into the tiniest spaces and pass through even the strictest traveler’s weight limitations. This portable sewing machine comes with an easy-carry handle, a storage drawer, thread cutter, foot pedal, adapter, and thread bag. It runs on DC 6-volt battery power, but can also be plugged into the wall with the included A/C adapter.

Although the majority of the reviews of this machine were positive, there were some complaints associated with the Michley LSS-505. The most common minor complaint was that the two included colors of thread were not useful and would have been better replaced by simple black and white. Many users also found the Michley LSS-505 manual to be poorly written, and had more success with the online YouTube instructions.

A few people complained that it can get bogged down or break needles, either after changing thread, or when the thread gets stuck in the bobbins. Those who took the time to “get to know the machine” however, found that many of the complaints were caused more from a lack of familiarity with its limitations than from any intrinsic flaws. These people stress that it does not work well with all fabrics (i.e. spandex), but that it certainly does what it claims to do with many other fabrics (i.e. cotton). Some called it “perfect for hemming and sewing lighter fabrics” Several reviews mentioned the loud noise, but added that for such an inexpensive and functional machine, the noise is a bearable inconvenience. It seems that the majority of negative reviews come from those who didn’t have the patience to work through its limitations and realize that this machine is made for portability, not for heavy-duty work.

As portable sewing machines go, nearly everyone agrees that the Michley LSS-505 accomplishes what it claims it will accomplish. Small, affordable, and functional for nearly every basic need- for a light and easily moveable machine – it gets the job done.
